Who are these guys?

Years ago, I was hooked on Friday Night Lights. The show’s iconic chant, “Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t Lose,” stuck with me. Simple, yet profound. It wasn’t just a rallying cry for a football team—it felt like the same life philosophy my father taught me from a young age. To me, it offered two guiding principles for living a better life: First, keep your eyes wide open. See the world clearly, without letting it cloud your judgment or blind you to the truth. Second, fill your heart with what matters—faith, hope, love for your family, your friends, and humanity as a whole. The problem is, too many people aren’t living this way. We live in a world where it often feels easier to hate than to love, and where, in the wake of hate, ignorance and foolishness thrive.

Then, there’s the force of nature we all face, whether we’re prepared or not. Over the years, I’ve experienced tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, blizzards, floods, wildfires, polar vortexes, coastal surges from El Niño, power outages, avalanches, and brown-out heatwaves.

Last year, just across the mountains from us, a “water hurricane” tore through parts of North Carolina and Tennessee. Hurricane-force winds and nearly 30 inches of rain devastated entire communities. More than 400 roads and two major interstates were closed and impassable. The aftermath was even worse than what you saw on the news. There was tremendous loss of life, delayed emergency response, widespread power outages, negative government intervention, disruption to the supply chain, and a desperate shortage of shelter for the thousands displaced by the storm. It took 53 days to restore the drinking water systems, and months later, I-40 is still closed between Tennessee and North Carolina. In the face of this chaos, it was the people from surrounding states, churches, and local communities who stepped in—showing up with selfless service to help however they could.
